Bateman Original Designs
These Terms & Conditions apply to purchases, custom commissions, quotations and services supplied by Bateman Original Designs. By placing an order, accepting a quotation or entering into a custom-order agreement, the customer agrees to the applicable terms set out below.
All prices are stated in Australian dollars.
Product prices, materials and availability may change from time to time. Any price confirmed in an accepted order or valid quotation will be honoured subject to the terms of that order or quotation.
Because many Bateman Original Designs pieces are handmade, one-of-a-kind or produced using limited, vintage or specialty materials, exact materials may not always remain available. Where a material required for a custom commission becomes unavailable, we will discuss suitable alternatives with the client before making a material change that affects the agreed design or price.
Bateman Original Designs reserves the right to correct genuine typographical, pricing or website errors before an order or quotation has been accepted
Bateman Original Designs specialises in handcrafted fashion, millinery and accessories.
Small variations in handmade construction, placement, finish, embellishment, colour or materials may occur and form part of the individual nature of a handcrafted piece.
Where vintage, natural, limited-edition or individually sourced materials are used, exact replication of another piece may not be possible.
Nothing in this section limits a customer's rights where an item fails to meet a consumer guarantee under Australian Consumer Law.
Custom work is undertaken according to the design, specifications, materials and requirements agreed with the client.
A production position is not secured until any required custom-order agreement has been completed and the specified deposit has been received.
Estimated completion dates and fitting schedules will be discussed as part of the commission. Clients should advise Bateman Original Designs of any fixed event or required completion date before accepting the quotation.
Clients are responsible for providing accurate measurements and information requested for the commission and, where fittings are required, for attending agreed fittings within the necessary timeframe.
Changes requested after a design, quotation or construction stage has been approved may require additional materials or labour and may affect the final price and completion schedule. Any significant additional cost will be discussed before the additional work proceeds.
Unless otherwise stated in writing, quotations for custom work are valid for 14 days from the date of issue.
If the required agreement has not been completed and the specified deposit has not been received within that period, the quotation expires automatically.
An expired quotation may be reviewed or reissued, but the original price, materials, availability and production scheduling cannot be guaranteed.
A new or revised quotation may be required where material costs, availability, client requirements, design specifications or the scope of work have changed.
Acceptance of a quotation does not secure a production position until the requirements stated in that quotation, including any required agreement and deposit, have been completed.
The deposit and payment schedule applying to a custom commission will be stated in the individual quotation or custom-order agreement.
Deposits allow Bateman Original Designs to reserve production time, obtain materials and commence work on the commission.
If a client cancels an accepted custom commission, Bateman Original Designs may deduct reasonable costs already incurred in connection with the commission, including materials specifically purchased, work already completed and other non-recoverable costs committed to the order, subject to Australian Consumer Law and other applicable law.
Any additional cancellation conditions applying to a particular commission will be stated in the quotation or custom-order agreement.
Original sketches, illustrations, drawings, layouts, written design specifications and other original design material created and supplied by Bateman Original Designs remain the property of Bateman Original Designs unless otherwise agreed in writing.
Curated combinations of fabrics, trims, embellishments and construction details supplied as part of a proposed custom commission are provided for the purpose of considering that Bateman Original Designs commission.
Design documents, sketches and other original materials supplied by Bateman Original Designs must not be copied, distributed, commercially reproduced or supplied to another dressmaker, manufacturer or third party for the purpose of reproducing the proposed Bateman Original Designs commission without prior written permission.
Receiving or paying for a finished garment, hat or accessory does not by itself transfer copyright in Bateman Original Designs drawings, illustrations, written specifications, photographs or other copyright material.
No transfer or licence of intellectual property rights should be assumed unless it has been expressly agreed in writing.
Unless otherwise stated, photographs, artwork, illustrations, written content and original design material appearing on the Bateman Original Designs website and associated business platforms are owned by Bateman Original Designs or used with permission.
Website material may be viewed and shared for ordinary personal purposes, but it must not be reproduced, altered or used commercially without permission.
Photographs or historical material submitted by members of the public remain subject to the rights of their respective owners. Bateman Original Designs will seek appropriate permission before publicly using submitted identifiable personal photographs for promotional purposes.

Bateman Original Designs may offer promotions, discounts or special offers from time to time.
A promotion may have additional eligibility requirements, expiry dates or specific conditions.
Where specific promotion terms are provided, those terms apply in addition to these general Terms & Conditions.

Changes to These Terms
Bateman Original Designs may update these Terms & Conditions from time to time to reflect changes to the business, its services or applicable requirements.
The version applying to a confirmed order or custom commission will be the version applicable when that order or agreement was accepted, together with any specific terms contained in the client's quotation or custom-order agreement.
These Terms & Conditions are governed by the laws applicable in Victoria, Australia.
Designed by Hand. Defined by Heritage.
Before Bateman Original Designs returned in 2026, my mother, Sheila Bateman, spent many years creating one-off hats and millinery pieces under the Bateman Original Designs name.
Many of those hats were sold through The Hat Gallery, which was the name used to advertise and sell the hats. The hats themselves carried a Bateman Original Designs label inside.
Some of Mum’s hats are still out there — in wardrobes, hat boxes and, perhaps most importantly, old race-day photographs.
I still have Mum’s original catalogue and photographs of many of her designs, and I would love to see where some of those pieces ended up.
If you have a photograph of an original hat made by Sheila Bateman, send it to us or bring it along in person.
The original hat does not need to still exist.
Your photograph could show the hat on its own, you or a family member wearing it, an old race-day photograph, or any other clear photograph showing enough of the hat for us to identify it.
If I can identify and verify the hat against our family archive, you will receive 20% off one current Bateman Original Designs hat with a normal selling price of $100 or more as a thank-you for helping us reconnect with our history.
And if you know anything about the photograph — approximately when it was taken, where the hat was worn, who originally owned it, or the story behind it — I would love to hear that too.
Let’s see how many of Mum’s hats we can find.
Designed by Hand. Defined by Heritage.
1. This offer is available to Australian residents.
2. To qualify, a participant must provide Bateman Original Designs with a photograph showing a hat believed to have been made by Sheila Bateman.
3. Sheila Bateman’s hats were made under the Bateman Original Designs name. Hats sold through The Hat Gallery also carried a Bateman Original Designs label inside.
4. Photographs may be submitted digitally or shown to Bateman Original Designs in person. The original hat does not need to still exist or remain in the participant’s possession.
5. Bateman Original Designs will compare submitted photographs with its surviving catalogue, photographs and historical records. Bateman Original Designs’ determination as to whether a hat can be verified as an original Sheila Bateman piece is final for the purpose of this offer.
6. Where a hat is successfully verified, the person who submitted the photograph will receive 20% off one current Bateman Original Designs hat with a normal selling price of $100 or more.
7. The 20% discount:
8. One discount will be issued per independently verified original hat. Multiple photographs of the same historical hat do not create multiple discounts.
9. If several people submit photographs of the same historical hat, Bateman Original Designs may recognise the first verifiable submission for the purpose of issuing the discount.
10. Participants must only submit photographs they are entitled to share. Where another identifiable person appears in a photograph, the participant should have permission to provide that photograph to Bateman Original Designs.
11. Submission of a photograph does not automatically give Bateman Original Designs permission to publish it. Bateman Original Designs will seek permission before using a submitted photograph publicly on its website, social media, advertising, blogs, displays or other promotional material.
12. Historical information supplied with a photograph may assist with identification but does not by itself guarantee verification.
13. Bateman Original Designs may request additional photographs or information if the original image does not provide enough detail to identify the hat.
14. This offer applies only to genuine historical hats made by Sheila Bateman. It does not apply to hats merely resembling her designs or to current Bateman Original Designs pieces made after the business returned in 2026.
15. Bateman Original Designs reserves the right to amend or withdraw this offer. Any discount already validly issued before the offer is amended or withdrawn will continue to be honoured in accordance with these terms.
16. Any discount issued under this offer will be valid until 31/12/2026.
