In 1992, Bateman Original Designs entered Andromeda in the Australian Gown Of The Year.
Designed by Sheila Bateman, Andromeda was entered in Section 8, “Australian Gown Of The Year”, and placed 2nd from 38 entries.
The gown was made from a leather-look polyester material, heavily pin-tucked and embellished by hand with clear iridescent sequins and seed beads.
With its strong silhouette, controlled detailing and careful hand beading, Andromeda shows Sheila’s eye for formal design and the stage presence needed for competition work.
Andromeda remains one of the key early archive pieces of Bateman Original Designs, linking Sheila’s design work, dressmaking skill and competition history in the year Bateman Original Designs was formally registered.
The archive images include the original program, professional Gown Of The Year photographs, a photograph from judging day, the judges sheet and the script form submitted for entry, completed by Sheila Bateman. Additional photographs show the final fitting with model Neza Zivkovic.
