In 1994, Kalamazoo was featured in the Herald Sun.
Worn by Helen Bateman-Greville, Kalamazoo shows another side of the Bateman Original Designs archive: ballroom costume in use, designed for movement, performance and presentation rather than display alone.
The yellow gown was photographed for the Herald Sun article “Dancer with a Tall Order”, published on 8 August 1994. The article connected Helen’s ballroom dancing with the search for a suitable dance partner, while the photographs captured the gown’s colour, shape and stage presence.
Kalamazoo sits between the 1992 Australian Gown Of The Year entries and the later 1995 Imagination archive, showing how Sheila Bateman’s design work continued through ballroom, performance and custom dressmaking.
The archive images include the original Herald Sun clipping and photographs of Helen wearing Kalamazoo.
